What are the precautions to be taken when starting a DC motor?

In order to ensure safe motor operation, certain operating procedures must be followed when using DC motors. This article will discuss some safety precautions when starting a DC motor.
1. Check the wiring (including the wiring and connections of the power supply, controller, measuring instruments, etc.), and the spring elasticity and contact quality of the starter.
2. In case of constant voltage power supply, the starter must be turned on. Turn off the power switch and rotate the starter with the motor under load, staying on each contact for approximately two seconds (S) until the solenoid suctions the rotating arm in its final position.

3. If the motor is powered by a separate adjustable power supply, first turn on the excitation winding to reduce the supply voltage to a minimum. Next, close the armature circuit contactor and gradually increase the voltage until the motor is operating at the rated speed or voltage.
4. First, after connecting the motor to the shaft of the production machinery, apply less than 10% of the rated armature voltage and check that the speed direction of the motor and the production machinery are the same. If they are the same, the wiring is correct.
5. After starting the motor with the speed generator connected, the output characteristics of the speed generator should be checked and its polarity should be the same as the polarity on the control board.

6. After starting the motor, check if the spark level exceeds the standard and if there is spark on the commutator.
